UUMMANNAQ FJORD, BIRD CLIFFS & GLACIERS
The Uummannaq fjord is rich in minerals and has ferrous mountains. One of them is known for looking like a lunar landscape. This mountain is full of colors, mainly red and yellow. On this tour we’ll bring you ashore and you’ll be able to experience the moon landscape on a very close hand.
In the Uummannaq fjord we will also be able to see many bird cliffs (steep cliffs with numerous small shelves which serve as nesting locations for bird colonies) that stand up vertically in the air. Some of them are more than 1,000 meters high!
Among other things, the Uummannaq fjord is also characterized by it’s glaciers. One of them is located at the bottom of the fjord and is called Sermilik, that means “the place with ice”. Here we’ll turn off the engine for us to hear and appreciate the majestic sounds that come from inside the ice sheet.
The glaciers, specially this one, are rich in wildlife because the animals have great chances to find good food (that’s why you will see a lot of fishermen too); if you are lucky, you will be able to spot seals, whales, various bird species and a halibut. Here, while we appreciate nature, we’ll enjoy lunch together.
VISIT TO THE IKERASAK SETTLEMENT & PARNAAT ISLAND
After this, we will head towards one of the nearby settlements, called Ikerasak. Ikerasak means “the area that comes after the fjord” area where you can find more than one island. Here, a local family will be waiting for us, ready with a delicious coffee and snacks. Later on we’ll visit the village and explore its surroundings.
In the late afternoon, we will head towards Paarnat, which means “the place with blackberries”.
In Paarnat you will be able to see the two fishing huts that have been used for many decades and hear the roar of the mighty waterfall that is on top of the island!
After an amazing full day tour, at the end of the day we’ll sail back to Uummannaq.
During the summer you’ll experience sun and temperatures up to 20ºC almost every day. However, we always recommend to dress in layers even in this season because the temperature can drop, especially in the water and shadow. For this reason, we thought you would find useful to have a guide with recommendations of what to pack for your summer adventure in Greenland (clothing and essential items).
So, feel free to download it and start planning your trip with us!
